Tracy Martell

Pottery

I’m Tracy Martell, the Calgary-based potter behind Hippersons Pottery.

My work in functional stoneware is inspired by the natural world around me, especially the landscapes of the Canadian Rockies, and real (and even mythical) creatures that dwell in it. My decoration often has a narrative element, inspired by the sci-fi and animated TV shows I loved as a kid, and flights of whimsy, like a universe ruled by cats.

I use Plainsman clays from Medicine Hat, frequently I marbled combinations, and my designs celebrate the natural beauty of the clay. I aspire to bring a smile to peoples faces with my pottery, and invite them to see pottery in an unexpected way.

I’ve been an artist since I can remember, creating endless drawings and cartoons as a child, then later working in acrylic paint until I discovered spinning clay in 1999. I began as a hobbyist, learning through community cases, working in community studios, and eventually establishing a small home studio. I have been a professional potter since 2017. I teach pottery classes at two Calgary studios and I’m a board member of the Mount Pleasant Potters’ Guild. I’m thrilled to be part of The Painted Moose Artists Collective since February 2026 and I’m continually inspired by the talented artists I’m fortunate to work alongside.
