Living in the foothills of southern Alberta with the Rocky Mountains to the west and the prairie grasslands to the east provides the inspiration for my artwork. The ever changing landscape and diverse birds and animals that we share the land with offer lifetime of creative ideas.
I like to build my painting surface with multiple layers of paint and paper. Sanding back into the paint surface reveals the layers underneath creating a rich surface to add the imagery to. The final steps in my creative process involve drawing back onto the surface using graphite, inks and other drawing materials - adding lines, shapes and finer details. Collaging special Japanese silkscreen papers and other fine handmade papers is the final decorative touch. Adding these finer details invites the viewer to look closer at the imagery and they are rewarded for their ‘second look’ with these smaller details that only can be seen up close.
The response I am hoping for with my artwork is having the viewer take a deeper look at the imagery and form a connection with the birds, animals and landscapes that are portrayed.
